TOURIST POINTS

Angra dos Reis is considered a veritable ecological and cultural paradise as it is a part of the Bay of Ilha Grande, also known as Costa Verde (Green Coast), with a shoreline outlined by bays and dotted by 365 islands.
Nearby islands offer typical restaurants with local and international cuisine on extended weekends, holidays and high tourist seasons, as well as floating restaurants that come right up to boats offering customized services to sea vacationers. A great number of yachts and sailing boats from other countries also come to Angra, especially in the summer.

Main islands, beaches and tourist attractions the Bay has to offer

Botinas Islands

These two islands, when viewed from above appear to be shaped as a pair of boots, hence the name, Botinas, which in Brazilian Portuguese means a kind of boot. These islands grew in importance over the years and became a postcard reference for Angra dos Reis for two reasons: first because on these islands occurred the first ecological manifest in Brazil and second, due to its crystalline waters which make for excellent viewing of its multicolored fish. It is a veritable natural aquarium full of the most varied species of sea life such as porgies, yellow grunts, jurels and starfish among many other fascinating species.

Cataguases Island

An unusually beautiful island, just 20 minutes by motor boat from Blue Tree Park and that enchants visitors with its white sands and clear calm waters. Due to its proximity to the city of Angra, we recommend that, during the high seasons, it should be visited earlier in the morning to avoid the more intense tourist visitation hours.

Paquetá Beach

Locate in the Ribeira Bay, quite close to the resort, this island has a small strip of beach that enables sea baths on both sides. A must-stop for a variety of motor boats from nearby condominiums, Paquetá is a great option for those who do not want to go too far. In the old days, the highlight here was the freshly fried anchovy, served by the local fisherman. This fish abounded in the surrounding sea and one just had to pay out a line to fish one. Today, although there is a small floating restaurant, top Japanese food has replaced that delicacy of the past.

Pingo D´água Beach

Located within private grounds, which can only be reached by boat, this beach has clear white sand and waters. Surrounded by rocks and a dense vegetation, it’s a pleasant place to stop for a swim.

Itanhangá Island

In the Tupi (Brazilian Indian) language it means “the echo stone” and was for many years the sanctuary of renowned Californian architect Charles Bosworth. He became fascinated by the island during one of his many adventures by the seas of Angra in the 50ies. The island was his idea of paradise. Today, it offers the welcome warmth of his son Charlão that receives visitors with open arms. The good food is in charge of Mrs. Carmem that prepares wonderful tidbits such as: the famous moqueca, squid à dorê, home-style fish dish and many other mouth watering recipes. Topping the treat, there’s a banana sweet dish that will certainly add a few more kilos to your waistline. To come over to this place, savor some sea food and watch the legacy exposed in paintings and sculptures that are exhibited amongst Nature’s unique settings, is certainly an unforgettable decision.

Gipóia Island

Centered in the Angra islands group, it is the second largest considering bay extension, second only to Ilha Grande. It is a very special island of splendid beauty. Luxuriant native forest (Mata Atlântica), paradise-like inlets, crystal-clear waters and movie-like homes, it is located just a few minutes from Blue Tree Park. Seafarers, tourists and adventurers alike, flock to this site attracted by the magnetism of this spot of land of its many stories and history. It is the home of special locals such as Mr. Luiz Rosa, an embodiment of the original islander himself, with his picturesque tales.
Gipóia Island withholds the signs of the past when it comes to fishing the Jurubaíba, old-style. One can still marvel at the beauty and skill of this ancient fish-craft, where men aboard fragile canoes unite to vault the net. It is worth going there just to check this one out.

Jurubaíba Beach (Dentist Beach)

Located on the outer side of Gipóia Island, it also has very white sand and crystal clear waters. It is the most upbeat beach in Angra dos Reis, also known as Dentist Beach, as it’s frequented by people in motor boats and yachts. It is a must-go site until sunset. Two floating restaurants, Barcobar and Jango´s Bar, take turns in bringing the best in sea food and varied tidbits aboard. You just have to weigh anchor and solicitous caterers will soon come to take your orders.

Piedade Beach (Tenórios Beach)

This Beach, that has the real name of Tenórios Beach, is located in Gipóia Island and is a great place for sea baths. It has no bar infrastructure.

Amendoeiras Beach

This beach is Nature’s masterpiece. With fine white sand, abundant vegetation and surrounded by giant almond trees, hence the name, it’s one of the most beautiful in the region. Located on the outer side of Gipóia Island, it is difficult to get there as boats do not dare to come too close to the onrushing waves. It is mainly recommended only for those who know how to swim and on days of calm seas.

Flechas Beach

On this beach you will find the traditional restaurant owned by Mr. Luiz Rosa, built in a rustic setting, with its grass roofs and tables placed by the sea. From the deck one can view the majestic beauty of Ilha Grande in the background. The place has a landing bridge which is an excellent alternative for those who do not want to disembark directly onto he sand. At Flechas Beach, a famous and picturesque gathering of boats occurs on the fist of January for a traditional religious procession. This traditional festivity brings together some 2,500 boats every year.

Ilha Grande Island

It is the largest island in the bay with its 190 square Km. In the recent past, it was known and feared for having a high-security prison and such political prisoners as famous writer Graciliano Ramos. It is a great natural barrier that stops high sea waves from hitting the bay.

After the decommissioning of that prison, tourism grew fantastically, with new lodgings, restaurants and services springing up rapidly. The island then began to receive thousands of tourists from all over the world and became quickly known as a wildlife sanctuary. If on one side, the existence of this prison tarnished the island’s image, on the other hand, it helped preserve the ecosystem by barring disorganized occupation from the island.

The Township of Abraão is its main nucleus, with more than 70 lodging houses, innumerable restaurants and a number of tourist services. Open-air music festivals are promoted constantly, and the popular local folkloric dance forró, at fishermen homes, carries on gaily into the night. The inner part of the island, where tourist boats must navigate, is limited by Castelhanos Point on the East and Acaiá Point to the West, with nearly 40 Km between them.

Sítio Forte – Ubatubinha Beach

A very beautiful place that is shielded from the southwest winds and is the port of preference for sailing boats that cross the Bay of Ilha Grande. On the right side there’s Lelé’s Bar where one can enjoy tidbits and take a cold shower with mine water. Onto the left, in front of the bridge, there’s Gustavo’s Restaurant that only serves by reservation.

Lagoa Azul

Ilha Grande’s natural aquarium, with multicolored fish that swim around the boats. The ‘Petisco da Ilha’ (Island Tidbits Boat) is anchored in a strategic place and serves shrimp, squid, jurel fish and pastries.

Freguesia de Santana

Located in the center of Ilha Grande, from the inside, it was the place from whence the island was populated. The chapel was built in 1796 and, although not open to the public for visitation, it is noteworthy to check out this unique construction of the Portuguese era. There are two beaches, Freguesia de Dentro (inner portion) and Freguesia de Fora (outer portion). Connected by a little trail that is easily traversed, one can experiment both and decide which one is best. In the summer months we recommend landing before 10:00AM to avoid the flow of tourists that come from Abraão.

Saco do Céu

At this point of the island, the sea literally advances into the land, forming a cove that is protected all around. One actually feels that our boat is entering the forest. The beauty of the place is absolutely unparalleled. The name ‘Saco do Céu’ (Heaven’s Bag) was given due to the fact that the sea is so calm that on moonlit nights one can actually see details of the heavens reflected on its surface. Right as you enter, on the right hand side, there’s the Reis and Magos restaurant, an exotic place where one can savor sea food to the sound of the flute played by a local musician. For those who would prefer tidbits, the floating restaurant Almirantado is the right choice.

Lopez Mendes Beach

Unquestionably, one of the most beautiful beaches. Access is only possible by means of a beaten track that begins at the Palmas cove. The hike will last about 40 minutes and, for some, it can be demanding, especially on the climbs. We recommend caution because this is a beach with waves and undercurrents. The effort to get there is amply rewarded by the beach’s exuberant vegetation. The trail itself is not devoid of attractions, as it enables a good close look into the region’s flora and fauna.
